Following what has been called a “suspicious death” of a female passenger onboard a Carnival cruise, the FBI has launched an investigation into what happened on the ship, the agency shared Sunday.

According to a news release from the FBI, a woman passenger onboard the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship was found unresponsive during the ship’s February 27 trip.

The woman was found on the ship as it was traveling to Nassau, Bahamas. While medical staff and crew members attempted life-saving measures, the woman was pronounced dead on the ship, the FBI shared.

The ship returned to where it launched, Charleston, South Carolina, on March 4, and upon its arrival, agents with the FBI investigated the passenger’s room for evidence, the agency shared.

The FBI noted in its release that the incident was isolated, with no other passengers being at risk before or after the woman died.

Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli shared a statement with CNN about the woman’s death, noting that the cruise line is “fully cooperating.”

“Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau, and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy,” Lupoli told CNN, adding that “this is a matter for authorities in the Bahamas and Charleston, and we have no further comments.”

The investigation from the FBI is not unusual, as it often will investigate suspicious deaths of U.S. nationals and other “certain crimes on the high seas,” the press release said.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time, the FBI said.
