A flight from North Carolina to Florida left two passengers and two flight attendants hospitalized from injuries suffered on board when the plane encountered extreme turbulence on Wednesday.

The Allegiant flight was traveling from Asheville, North Carolina, to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. Officials shared that 179 passengers and six crew members were aboard when the plane went through “severe turbulence” before landing, airline spokesperson Andrew Porrello told CNN.

One passenger on board, Lisa Spriggs, spoke with NBC Miami about the flight and the rough air it traveled through.

“More than halfway through descending, and all of sudden, we heard a small turbulence. The stewardess fell to the ground,” Spriggs said. “Then we hit major turbulence, which was petrifying, and she was literally like ‘the Matrix.’ You can watch her go up in the air and land straight down. She broke her ankle.”

The flight-tracking site FlightAware showed that the plane dropped nearly 5,000 feet in altitude in less than two minutes as the plane hit the turbulent air.

The Federal Aviation Administration shared that it is investigating the incident.

The condition of those injured on the flight was not immediately made known, though they were taken off the plane on stretchers and transported to a local hospital.
