Disgraced former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar has been stabbed multiple times inside a Florida federal prison, as he serves a decades-long sexual assault sentence.

Two people familiar with the situation told the Associated Press (AP) that Nassar was involved in an altercation with another inmate when he was stabbed Sunday.

One of the people said he had been stabbed in the back and in the chest at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida.

The anonymous sources said he was in stable condition at a hospital Monday.

The sources were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the attack or the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Nassar is serving decades in prison for convictions in state and federal courts. He admitted sexually assaulting athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. Separately, Nassar pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

More than 150 victims spoke or submitted statements during a seven-day hearing more than four years ago.
