Here's what the new heavy soda trend is about

One trend has people calling an ice cold soda pop "crispy," and another has them making their drinks literally heavy, and there's no trend in between. So, what is heavy soda?

It's a trend sweeping TikTok and other social platforms where convenience and gas station owners change their machines to dispense drinks with more syrup than usual, creating a sweeter, more concentrated version of favorites like Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew. It seems to be happening mostly in the South.

And that's where concerns are already rife about kids and sugar consumption, especially through sodas.

Someone on Reddit posed a question about heavy soda, and there were plenty of answers. “For everyone asking, Heavy Pepsi is a Missouri thing,” one wrote, while another responded: “I’ve seen it in Missouri gas stations south of St. Louis. I tried the ‘heavy’ Mountain Dew. It’s way better than it should be.”

Here's a TikTok video explaining the heavy soda trend.

"The idea mirrors why McDonald’s Coke is famous for tasting better. Syrup to carbonated water ratios are boosted to account for melting ice. Unlike the popular new dirty soda trend, which dresses up soft drinks with creamers, fruit purées and syrups, heavy soda is all about maximum sweetness and flavor," the New York Post reported.
