Former Secretary of State and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was seen laughing during President Donald Trump’s first speech after taking his oath of office on Monday.
Clinton, who was present with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and several other former first ladies, couldn’t contain herself when Trump discussed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world,” Trump said. “A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America,’ and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to ‘Mount McKinley,’ where it should be and where it belongs.”
The remarks from Trump prompted his one-time adversary to look down, chuckle, and smile whilst sitting with other top political figures, camera footage showed.
The idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico was first floated by Trump earlier this month, sparking debate about whether or not the US had the authority to do so.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed Trump’s comments, making light of the proposal from Trump, floating her own idea instead.
“I mean, obviously, Gulf of Mexico, the name is recognized by the United Nations, an organism of the United Nations. But next, why don’t we call it ‘Mexican America’? It sounds nice, doesn’t it?” Sheinbaum said at a press conference.
Nonetheless, Trump signed an executive order on Monday, amongst several others, calling for the body of water to be renamed.
