Two recent crimes have anti-immigration activists in a furor and underscoring the need to deport violent illegals, including the shooting of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer during a botched robbery in a Manhattan park over the weekend, and the case of Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez in Illinois.
Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico living in Waukegan, Illinois, who was arrested on charges of concealing a corpse, abusing a corpse, and obstruction of justice. He was released from custody after his first court appearance but was arrested again by ICE agents and remains in ICE custody.
The victim, 37-year-old Megan Bos, was found decapitated and stored in a bleach-filled container in Mendoza-Gonzalez's yard. ABC 7 in Chicago reported "the autopsy revealed that Megan Bos possibly died from a fentanyl overdose, but Mendoza-Gonzalez was allegedly there when she died, and prosecutors say he hid her body for two months at his home. The Lake County Coroner said the final cause of death is still pending."
Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner criticized the laws that allowed Mendoza-Gonzalez to be released, expressing concern about the nature of the crime and the suspect's immigration status.
Republican state also Rep. Tom Weber questioned the decision to release Mendoza-Gonzalez, highlighting the severity of the crime and the suspect's actions after Bos' death. A statement from the Department of Homeland Security reported Megan Bos was decapitated.
The case against Mendoza-Gonzalez comes as a second suspect had been apprehended in connection with the shooting of the 42-year-old officer at Riverside Park in New York.
The officer, who was not in uniform, had been sitting with a woman in the park when two men approached on a moped just before midnight Saturday night. The passenger got off and approached the officer, who realized he was being robbed and drew his service weapon.
The two exchanged gunfire and the off-duty officer was shot in the face and arm. The perpetrator was injured before he and the moped driver rode off, police said. The officer was hospitalized in stable condition.
Kristi Noem, the head of Homeland Security reacted by saying this: "When I look at what Mayor Adams has done to New York City, it breaks my heart to see the families that have suffered because of his policies. Make no mistake, this officer is in the hospital today fighting for his life because of the policies of the mayor of this city, and the City Council and the people that were in charge of keeping the public safe, they refused to do so and now we have this situation on our hand."
