While attempting to protect his small poodle from being attacked, a Houston man was mauled to death by his neighbor’s dog on Wednesday, according to police.
At approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, officers from the Houston Police Department responded to a home where they found a victim lying on the ground being gnawed at by one of the dogs, Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson shared with KTRK.
Officers were forced to open fire on the dog after it charged at them. The animal was hit by a bullet, but it survived the injury and ran off.
Police shared that they believe the man’s neighbor is the owner of the animals, ABC13 reported.
An ambulance was called to the scene of the attack, and the victim, a 69-year-old man, was pronounced dead from his injuries, police reported.
According to Click2Houston, investigators discovered that the man had heard something going on in his yard before he walked outside to see three dogs had gotten through his fence and were attacking his pet.
Trying to save his animal, the owner quickly became the target of the animals, and they knocked him over, attacking him on the ground.

Police have not shared what breeds the dogs who killed the man were, the identity of the man, or potential charges.
Police did share that the dogs are currently in the hands of Animal Control. Animal cruelty investigators also arrived at the scene, ABC13 reported.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether or not the owner of the dogs will face criminal charges for the man’s death.
