Medical expert offers advice during Adderall shortage

A local expert on behavioral health has advice for how to treat children and adults, who are facing shortages of an important drug.

The FDA issued an alert that there shortages of Adderall and its generic equivalents, which are prescribed to treat children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.

The FDA blames the shortage on production issues with the leading manufacturer.

Dr. Danesh Alam, who directs the behavioral health program at Central DuPage Hospital, said there are alternative treatments available that might help.

He said patients need to work with their doctors to make sure those alternatives are safe and effective for them.
