Prisoners hospitalized following crash between prison van and pickup truck

Several prisoners and correction officers were injured in a crash late Monday night after their prison van collided with a pickup truck in southeast Texas.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. in Port Arthur, about 90 miles east of Houston, according to reports.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice van was carrying six inmates and three officers, all of whom were taken to the hospital with various but non-life threatening injuries, a department spokesperson told KBMT.

KFDM reported that the Port Arthur Fire Department had to used the Jaws of Life to free the driver of the van.

The driver of the pickup was also taken to the hospital. All victims are said to be in stable condition.

Authorities haven't said what led to the crash or which vehicle may have been responsible.

According to KFDM, the van was taking the prisoners from the Luther Unit in Navasota to the Stiles Unit in Jefferson County.

The crash remains under investigation.
