Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) shared on Wednesday that he will step down when his term ends and not seek reelection, criticizing other older politicians, saying that the country needs a “new generation of leaders.”

Romney shared his thoughts in a video message, outlining several issues he still considered to be troubling the nation, including rising national debt and the climate crisis.

The longtime politician added that “neither President Biden nor former President Trump are leading their party to confront those issues.”

Romney then looked to his age, as the 76-year-old Republican said it was time for fresh blood to serve the nation.

“At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-80s,” Romney said. “Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in.”

Still, despite his decision not to run for reelection, Romney said he isn’t “retiring from the fight,” telling his constituents that he will still “be your United States Senator until January of 2025.”
