A man has died in a three-car crash that, according to police, was caused by a fellow driver’s sneezing.
61-year-old David Klemp of Valparaiso was killed early evening Friday when he struck head-on a car that had been pushed into his lane, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department said.
The chain reaction crash started a little after 5 p.m. on U.S. Highway 6 between State Road 149 and County Road 200 West in Liberty Township. The driver of the initial car told authorities he was traveling west on U.S. 6 when he began sneezing. He claimed he sneezed three times and, because of that, did not see that a car was stopped in front of him. The driver slammed into the rear of the second car, which was waiting to turn left into the Arbor View Animal Hospital. The collision caused the second car into the eastbound lanes and subsequently collided with Klemp’s car.

Klemp became trapped in his pickup truck and despite firefighters efforts to extricate him, he died on the scene.
Police said the driver of the first car who claimed he had the sneezing fit agreed to a breathalyzer test and it revealed that he had no alcohol in his system.
Porter County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the crash.
