A spring break trip to Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado turned fatal for two teenagers last weekend after the two got into a sledding accident.

A press release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office identified the two teens as Dylan Bazzell, 17, and Drew Fehr, 18, both from Illinois.

The press release shared that the accident occurred at the resort on Saturday night at around 8:30 p.m. when the teens rode tandem down the halfpipe before flying off a large snowbank at the bottom.

At the bottom of the ramp, the boys went airborne, resulting in a hard landing on ice below, resulting in blunt force trauma, according to the sheriff’s office.

After the landing, first responders gave the teens immediate medical attention, but the sheriff’s office shared that they were not able to be revived. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The teens were classmates at Prairie Central High School in Fairbury, Illinois, according to a statement provided by the school district.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the individuals involved in this tragic incident,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in the release.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office is taking over the investigation to determine the cause and manner of death of the boys.

As the spring break season continues, the sheriff’s office noted that it is important to practice safe behaviors on the mountain.

“The Summit County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to always practice safe snow activity habits and to be aware of the risks associated with these activities,” the release said.
