Advanced technology doesn't tend to have a cheap price tag, and the electric vehicle maker Tesla is proof as it just announced price hikes for its self-driving features.
The news was shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter on Sunday when he announced the feature would increase from $12,000 to $15,000 starting on Sept. 5.
The company website says that subscription prices for full self-driving capability run a Tesla owner $99 to $199 a month, depending on the version of the Autopilot technology. Whether or not that price will change is unknown.
What is known is that consumers will now pay more for one of the top features available for the electric vehicles. Tesla's cost around $47,000 for the company's Model 3 vehicle — Tesla's low-end vehicle — but some of the other cars can be priced as high as $121,000, the starting price for the Model X.
Tesla has been making advancements to its full self-driving features, including improving left turns, boosting its animal and pedestrian detection, and coming to smoother stops, Electrek reported.
Musk took time on Twitter earlier this week to praise his team working on making the improvements, sharing that "the talent level at Tesla is incredible."
For those worried about robots taking over the world, don't be, as the cars still require a human to participate in the self-driving process. This includes the driver keeping their hands on the wheel at all times, paying attention to the road, and knowing the route being taken.
"The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous," Tesla's website says.
