A Texas woman was arrested early Friday morning after colliding with a signboard at a DUI checkpoint, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.
Police had set up the checkpoint on Tahquitz Canyon Way in downtown Palm Springs on Thursday night. During the six-hour operation, “an significant incident occurred that underscores the vital importance of our DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoints,” the department said.
Around midnight, a vehicle nearly ran over a group of pedestrians leaving a nearby movie theater, then crashed into an electronic sign flashing the words “Don’t Drink and Drive.” The driver, identified as Texas resident Clarissa Hernandez, was arrested for driving under the influence.

“The well-coordinated actions of officers and our dispatch center ensured the pedestrians' safety,” police said.
Hernandez was released Friday morning on a $5,000 bond.
In total, three DUI arrests were made at the checkpoint, along with five citations for driving without a valid license.
