A Washington couple is behind bars after they reportedly disguised themselves as firefighters and burglarized several homes in a wildfire evacuation zone.

The incident unfolded Monday morning in Spokane, when the family member of a resident noticed a suspicious man and woman at his relative's home, according to the Spokane County's Sheriff's Office.

"The citizen said the suspicious suspects pulled into the driveway, and he contacted them, knowing no one was supposed to be there," police said in a statement.

The man, who was dressed in a yellow high-visibility long-sleeve shirt similar to a firefighter, told the caller he had a flat tire and pulled over to fill it up, police said. The caller, noticing a tire on the vehicle appeared low, offered to fill the tire at his shop. Moments later, a woman emerged from behind the home and got into the Audi.

"He said the couple must have noticed that he was calling law enforcement because they slowly drove toward the shop and left the area without stopping," police said.

Detectives found the back door to the home was unlocked, and it appeared the kitchen cabinets had been rummaged through, but nothing seemed to be missing.

Police later notified the homeowner, who stated no one had permission to enter the home, and he was missing two drills valued at approximately $300.

Later that afternoon, a deputy spotted an Audi that matched the suspects' vehicle's description and stopped it.

According to police, the suspects, identified as 38-year-old Matthew Parsons and 37-year-old Diane Guerrero, gave a bogus excuse for why they were in the area.

"Guerrero explained they were trying to get back to Tacoma but got lost.  They just stopped at a gas station, where Parsons changed the tire, and were returning to Tacoma," police said.

Ultimately, Parsons and Guerrero were taken into custody and transported back to the county jail for booking. Both are facing several charges including residential burglary, vehicle prowling and theft.
