Four high-ranking Trenton police officers gained access to the department’s timesheet system and manipulated the hours they worked, costing taxpayers thousands of dollars, an investigation first reported by The Trentonian revealed.

Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said his office referred the matter to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the state attorney general, but he said they declined to investigate.

“So it’s back to us for an administrative remedy that could involve termination, could involve disciplinary charges and the like,” Gusciora said.

Two of the officers are accused of taking vacation days but marking them as regular hours worked, restoring the availability of vacation time, The Trentonian reported.

In the meantime, Gusciora ensures only the highest-ranking officers currently have access to timesheets.

“Computers were not hacked. They were administrative officers who had access to the system,” he added. “Systems are in place now to restrict access to vacation and sick time records.”

Honesty is important, Gusciora said, and he’s determined to figure out what exactly happened and hold those accountable.

Contrary to The Trentonian’s report, Gusciora said no one is being forced to resign or retire, for now. Discipline, including termination, remains an option, though, if his office determines it was in fact a case of deception.
