A man is behind bars for allegedly scheming to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against family members.

Max Garza, 48, was arraigned earlier this month in Troy on five counts of solicitation to commit murder. Bond was set at $1 million.

Troy police first got word of the plot when a witness came to the police station on July 1 to report Garza was making plans to hire someone to kill his family members. The witness said Garza was also looking to buy a gun to kill the family members himself if he wasn’t able to hire someone, according to Troy police.

Garza reportedly had “hoped to gain a larger inheritance from the estate” and was also “generally upset” with his targeted family.

While authorities did not specify how Garza and the family members are related, a source tells WWJ the targeted relative is his sister.

The witness had recorded conversations of Garza discussing his plans to solicit or commit or murder, officials said. The plans included how he would pay for the hit, how he would construct an alibi and his alternative plan if he was unable to hire someone.

The recordings were turned over to investigators, who began working to verify the reported information.

Investigators interviewed Garza on July 3 at the police department and he was taken into custody.

“The information that we received from the witness proved credible and officers felt if Garza was not immediately arrested his family was in danger,” police officials said.

Authorities did not say when Garza’s next court appearance will be.
