A shooting outside of a North Kansas City high school basketball game on Saturday night left at least two people critically injured, according to local officials.
In a statement provided to CBS News, North Kansas City High School shared that shots were heard “at the conclusion of the game in Missouri.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has begun investigating the situation, as two deputies were working security in for the game and responded when the shots were heard. After tracking the source of the gunshots, the deputies found a crime scene with one victim before then learning of a second victim, who is a juvenile.
The victims were quickly taken to a local hospital where they were listed in critical condition from their wounds.
The school district highlighted in a message to families and staff that the shooting took place outside of the building, and that everyone attending the basketball game “were asked to stay indoors while law enforcement worked to resolve the issue safely.”
During a press conference on Saturday, North Kansas City police Sgt. Christopher Kimmel said that the circumstances of the shooting were still not known and that investigators were still working to uncover a motive.
“We’re reviewing video right now trying to figure out exactly what we have,” Kimmel said, adding that he thinks they “do have some witnesses that we’re currently trying to interview.”
Kimmel condemned the violence, saying that events like high school basketball games should be safe places for kids to enjoy.
“We want our youth to come and enjoy a basketball game, and now we’re talking about lives that are altered for the worse, and I’m sure it’s going to be senseless,” Kimmel said.
