Christmas is just around the corner, and that means millions of Americans will get even more gift cards that could gather dust.
Ted Rossman, credit card industry analyst with creditcards.com, says you run the risk of allowing that unused gift card value to vanish into thin air.
"Most gift cards don't expire. If they do, it has to be at least five years in the future, but inactivity fees can kick in after just 12 months of non-use," Rossman said.
Some websites will allow you to sell a gift card for something close to its original value. Rossman tells the WBBM Noon Business Hour that you should just spend that gift card on yourself or someone else.
"If you can buy something for yourself, or for someone on your gift list, that's how you can get full value.”
Some estimates say Americans are sitting on $21 billion of unused gift card value.
