Ehlmann addresses proposed changes to St. Charles County Executive eligibility

St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann recently submitted an ordinance that would make the County Executive position a full-time job.

“St. Louis County has had a County Executive for 65 years, and [St. Charles County has] had one for 25 years,” Ehlmann says. “During that entire period… the County Executive has treated that position as a full-time job.”

Ehlmann says the change was inspired by a proposed charter change in St. Louis County where current St. Louis County Executive Sam Page works part-time as an anesthesiologist at Mercy Hospital.

“St. Louis County council went ahead and put a similar proposal on the ballot that lets people of St. Louis County decide whether or not his position of county executive should be a full-time job," Ehlmann says.

Ehlmann says the position requires total commitment and is thus compensated accordingly.

“Over a four-year period with all the benefits added to it, that’s close to a million dollars,” Ehlmann says. “For that kind of money, I don’t think you should have another job.”

St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann joins Marc to break down his recent proposal and its comparisons to what’s happening with Sam Page in St. Louis County.
