Former Sen. John Danforth's statement sparks new candidate in Missouri Senate race

Former UN Ambassador and longtime US Senator from Missouri, John Danforth, weighed in on the battle to replace retiring Senator Roy Blunt with an editorial that appeared over the weekend. In it, Danforth cited poll numbers that an independent candidate would fare well in the race that includes Missouri's ousted governor, the current Attorney General, several House members, an Air Force Veteran, a Marine Veteran, as well as a local personal-injury attorney.

"He's always been involved in candidate recruitment," says former Missouri State Senator John Lamping, but "he's realized his voice in the Republican Party is not very loud anymore and he really doesn't care for the whole MAGA-movement and Trump and all that stuff. He didn't like Tea Party stuff that much either."

Following the release of Danforth's polling numbers, longtime Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider announced that he would file to run for the seat as an Independent. Schneider served as Florissant's Mayor from 2011 to 2019.
