OPINION: Carafano: ‘The more we engage with the Taliban the weaker they think we are’

The White House announced, “no rush” to recognize the newly announced Taliban government in Afghanistan. Jim Carafano, a leading expert in national security and foreign policy challenges, says this is antithetical to their actions.

Thus far, the Biden administration strategy has been to engage, enable and empower the Taliban. A strategy Carafano calls, “unbelievably naïve and stupid”. The more we engage with the Taliban, the weaker they think we are.

Carafano also reflects on the approaching 20th anniversary of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

“I don’t know the day of the next 9-11 but I know there are people that are passionately trying to pull it off. That’s a reason why we should be concerned. The other reason we should be concerned is this administration is not taking it seriously,” says Carafano.
