Missouri Senate Bill 262, sponsored by Senator Dave Schatz (R – Dist.
26), would increase the Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) for the purpose of increasing “transportation funding”.
Despite the legislation being introduced by a Republican, it’s facing strong opposition by fellow colleagues due, at least in part, to poor timing.
At a time when gas prices are skyrocketing and the state is sitting on an influx of COVID-19 relief funding, pushing to increase the MFT is a tough sell.
Missouri Senator Bob Onder (R – Dist. 2) says the majority of the Republican caucus voted “no” on the proposed tax.
“I suspect the House kills it,” says Onder.
