"China and Russia want exactly the same thing in Europe, and anything that's good for China and Russia is bad for us," says Heritage's Jim Carafano in his weekly visit with the Marc Cox Show.
As troops from Russia continue to head toward the border with Ukraine, the United States is strengthening eastern Europe and NATO with troops as well.
"The thing that I think people don't get is, it's not about Ukraine. Putin, his plan isn't, 'I'll just grab the Ukraine and I'm done,'" explained Carafano. "His goal is to destabilize and weaken Europe. And reconquer eastern Europe the way that the Soviets did, and drive the United States out of Europe. The problem for that, among other things, is that's exactly what China wants. China wants a weak and divided Europe, they want the United States gone. They want us isolated and alone, and they want to create a world where we're just basically manning the high castle. That's the stakes here."
Carafano points out the importance of NATO in this situation in Europe
"Putin would not be doing this if he didn't fear NATO. He would not be saying, 'Oh, these countries can't join NATO.' The point is that China and Russia both fear that the Atlantic community can defend itself," he says. "NATO is actually a huge success and really matters, because if it didn't matter, Putin wouldn't bother doing this stuff!"
