"That's how you prevent wars, you use strength," says former Missouri Senator Jim Talent, "Peace through, what? Strength. It's not that complicated."
On the heels of finding out that Russia agreed with China to avoid an invasion of Ukraine until after the Olympics, Talent says, that Russia and China are "partners, but not allies, and they may not be partners as much after this now. The Chinese I'm sure are studying this carefully and re-assessing."
Talent said the most important thing to learn from the situation with Russia is deterrence, "maintaining strength and creating in the aggressor, the conviction that you will use the strength. So it's a combination of the capability and the intention. We allowed our capabilities to decline and repeatedly sent the message to [Vladimir] Putin that we would not use what we had. And we get, a war."
