With the No. 6 overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings went with the German defenseman Moritz Seider. Newly appointed general manager Steve Yzerman made a splash with his first pick, catching the crowd and analysts off guard.

Name: Moritz Seider

Pos: Defenseman

Height: 6'4

Weight: 207 pounds

Age: 18

Seider played for the Mannheim Eagles, part of the highest level hockey league in Germany, where he tallied six points (2G, 4A) in 29 games and added three more assists in 11 playoff games.

The long defenseman is a superb skater that has great speed and acceleration going both ways. He has the ability to go end-to-end with the puck and stick handles fairly well. He can open up the ice with his passing and sees the ice very well.

Seider is not afraid to lay the body in the defense zone, but his over eagerness to be aggressive tends to get him caught out of position.

He is a bit of a project, will take some time before he makes the jump to the league, but good coaching could accelerate that timeline.
