Former Detroit Piston guard and general manager Joe Dumars has landed himself a new gig with the Sacramento Kings, being names the advisor to the general manager.
The Kings general manager is Vlade Divac, who had a good relationship with Dumars prior to hiring him.
"Joe and I played together in the league and is a legend in our sport," said Divac per the teams press release. "As an experienced and talented basketball executive, I'm excited to have him serve as a special advisor and expert resource for our incredible front office team."
"I've known Vlade for decades, and I'm thrilled to work with him and the Sacramento Kings at such an exciting time for the franchise," said Dumars, per the press release.
Dumars has an abundance of experience with the league. He was with the Pistons for nearly 30 years, 14 as a Hall of Fame guard and 14 as the franchises general manager.
Dumars has solidified himself in Pistons history. He was a key player for the Bad Boys in the 80's and early 90's and helped build the legendary 2004 Pistons that went on to win an NBA Championship. He averaged 16 points, 2.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists throughout his career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
During his stint as the GM, Dumars' Pistons went 595-536 (.527) with 73 playoff wins, six division titles, two Conference Championships, two trips to the Finals and one NBA Championship. His Pistons went to six straight Conference Finals and Dumars was the first african american general manager to win an NBA title.
Dumars joins the Kings just one day after the NBA Draft, which is probably a good thing, seeing that was his biggest weakness as a GM. Only one player drafted by Dumars went on to be named an All-Star (Andre Drummond, 2012) and is known for taking Darko Milicic over Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in 2004.
Details of his contract have not been released.
