The New York Jets blew a 16-point lead at home to the Bills in Week 1.
Then they lost their starting quarterback. Then they lost their backup in a 23-3 loss at home to the Browns in Week 2. And now they hit the road for a Week 3 matchup with the Patriots.
So it comes as little surprise that they opened as 22.5-point underdogs.
For most players and coaches on the Jets, this has to be new territory. A spread that wide is exceedingly rare in the NFL.
But for head coach Adam Gase? Nothing he hasn't seen before.
"I was in Detroit for five years," Gase told reporters on Wednesday.
Asked if he's ever been this big an underdog (22.5 pts), Gase said, "I was in Detroit for five years." #Jets
— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) September 18, 2019Gase broke into the NFL with the Lions in 2003 and filled varous roles on the coaching staff through 2007. Detroit went 26-54 over that span, with seven losses by more than 30 points -- including four (!!) in 2007.
Yeah, it's safe to assume the Lions were 22.5-point dogs somewhere along the line.
By the way, who can we laugh at if not ourselves? Damien Woody, an offensive lineman who played on four of those teams, got quite the kick out of Gase's remark.
Don't I know --
— Damien Woody (@damienwoody) September 18, 2019The Lions, in case you were wondering, are 6.5-point underdogs at the Eagles this week.
