Shortly after word leaked of their supposed interest in trading for Dennis Smith Jr., the Pistons indeed acquired a point guard on Tuesday. But Smith wasn't their guy.
Instead the Pistons signed Isaiah Whitehead to a two-way contract, according to Shams Charania. Whitehead, a 2016 second-round pick of the Jazz before being dealt to the Nets, has spent this season playing in Russia.
Over parts of two seasons with the Nets, he averaged 7.2 points and 2.4 assists. He's a product of Seton Hall.

The Pistons are trying to solidify their backcourt heading into the second half of the season. Reggie Jackson hasn't been a great fit in Dwane Casey's offense, while Ish Smith just returned from a 19-game absence due to a groin injury. Jose Calderon is the team's third option at point guard.

It's not yet clear how Whitehead will fit into the rotation -- or how much time he'll spend in Detroit. To make room for him on the roster, the Pistons dismissed point guard Keenan Evans from his two-way deal.

At 18-24, the Pistons sit in 10th place in the East, 1.5 games behind the Hornets for the final playoff spot. They've lost 17 of their last 22 games.

As for their interst in Smith Jr., it was reported Monday night that the Pistons have contacted the Mavericks regarding a trade. The Mavs are reportedly actively shopping the No. 9 overall pick in 2017.

In two seasons in Dallas, Smith Jr. has averaged 14.4 points and 4.8 assists per game. He was named to the All-Rookie second team last season.

The trade deadline is Feb. 7.
