They could still try to re-sign him this summer -- Jensen is held in high regard within the organization -- but at the very least they won't risk losing him for nothing.
Jensen has two goals and 15 points, the latter tying a career high, and a plus-one rating in 60 games this season. He told reporters on Thursday he was hoping to stay with Detroit past Monday's trade deadline.
“This is the organization that drafted me, the team’s amazing, the staff is amazing, the fans are amazing. So, obviously, I love it here," Jensen said.
He added, "They’re going to do what they need to do."
And when Holland got the second-round pick he was seeking, plus a young blue-liner with NHL experience, he pulled the trigger.
In Bowey, the Red Wings get a former second-round pick who's played in 84 games over two seasons with the Capitals. (He did not play during the team's Stanley Cup run last spring.) In 33 games this season he has one goal, six points and a plus-three rating.
Bowey is signed through next season with a cap hit of $1 million, after which he'll be a restricted free agent.
The most prominent Red Wings on the block ahead of Monday's deadline are Gustav Nyquist and Jimmy Howard, for both of whom Holland is believed to be seeking a first-round pick.
