The college football world received some stunning news on Wednesday after multiple reports indicated that Alabama head coach Nick Saban was retiring after 28 years.

Saban, 72, won seven national championships as a head coach, including six with Alabama in the last 17 seasons since being hired in 2007. His most recent championship came in 2020.

Alabama also won nine Southeastern Conference championships and was a perennial contender during Saban’s tenure, winning SEC Coach of the Year five times.

Prior to Alabama, Saban was head coach at LSU, where he won his other national title, as well as Michigan State and Toledo.

After five seasons at LSU, Saban spent two years in the NFL as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, but failed to find the same success, going 15-17 during his tenure before returning to college with Alabama.

In addition to his seven national championships, Saban finishes with a career 292-71-1 record, sixth all-time in FBS, and 11 SEC titles – joining Bear Bryant as the only other coach to win the SEC at two different schools.
