Derek Lalonde wants Dan Campbell to speak to Red Wings

A lifelong Buffalo Bills fan, Derek Lalonde said he's still kicking himself for missing out an invitation from Dan Campbell and the Lions to attend training camp this summer. The new head coach of the Red Wings hadn't yet made the move from Tampa to Detroit.

"Being a football fan, I’ve liked watching him, his passion, what he’s about," Lalonde said Tuesday. "He’s been fun to watch, so I’m looking forward to meeting him some time."

Ideally, that will happen this winter. Lalonde, who will be at Ford Field for Thursday's clash between the Bills and the Lions, plans to invite Campbell to speak to the Red Wings and maybe peel some paint off the walls in the dressing room later this season.

"The same passion and excitement that the fan base has here with Coach Campbell, I have, too," said Lalonde. "How can you not? When their season’s over, I’m gonna ask him to come talk to the guys: I don’t care what you talk about, just talk with the passion you always do."

Campbell, a born-and-bred Texan, might not know much about hockey. But he knows how to rally the troops. If Lalonde's players need a pick-me-up this season, the kneecap specialist is his guy -- with one caveat.

"Not looking forward to wrestling him or getting into a bar brawl with him. Maybe if he’s on my side, but not against him," Lalonde said with a laugh. "If he looks me in the eyes, I’ll be looking for nickels on the ground."
