While they wait to unveil a new helmet for the 2023 season, the Lions have unveiled a new jersey patch as part of their plans to commemorate the 90th season in franchise history.
The patch, which will also be displayed as a team logo throughout Ford Field this season, is an homage to the team logo from the 1960s and will be sewn on the left shoulder of the Lions' jerseys, as seen below:
The Lions are also introducing a new alternate helmet this season and are in talks with Nike about new uniforms for the season after that. The new helmet, which will be paired with the Lions' all-grey alternate uniform, is slated to be unveiled sometime this spring.
Originally founded in Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans, the re-named Lions came to Detroit in 1934 and played their inaugural season at University of Detroit Stadium.
Owner Sheila Ford Hamp said in a statement released Wednesday, "It is truly amazing that we are celebrating 90 seasons of Lions football."
“My family is proud to have been associated with the organization for 60 of those years and cherish the relationship the team has with the NFL, the city of Detroit and our amazing Lions fans around the world," said Ford Hamp. "We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our fans throughout the upcoming season.”
