Lions' Biggest Free Agent Signing Could Miss Season Opener

Bad news for Big V.

Halapoulivaati Vaitai, the Lions' biggest splurge in free agency, could be in danger of missing Sunday's season-opener against the Bears with a foot injury. He was limited in practice Wednesday and won't practice at all on Thursday, per Matt Patricia.

The Lions gave Vaitai a five-year, $45 million deal in March to be their new right tackle. It was tied for the ninth-biggest contract handed out in free agency.

Detroit liked his versatility and his durability; Vaitai appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles each of the past three seasons. It appears that streak could come to an end in his first game with the Lions.

If Vaitai can't go, Detroit will likely turn to Tyrell Crosby at right tackle. Crosby has performed well in emergency duty in the past, including last season when he stepped in for Taylor Decker at left tackle.

But Vaitai's potential absence could loom large against a Bears' defensive front that features Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn.

The Lions will hope for better news Thursday on the likes of Kenny Golladay (hamstring), Da'Shawn Hand (groin) and D'Andre Swift (hip), all of whom were limited at practice Wednesday.
