Pistons reportedly extend GM Troy Weaver

The Pistons hired general manager Troy Weaver in the summer of 2020 to restore the franchise to glory. He's earned himself at least a few more years.

Weaver has signed a new contract with the Pistons, according to Shams Charania, that will extend his original four-year deal. The contract was agreed to over the summer, according to the Free Press, but first reported publicly on Wednesday. The length of the extension is not yet known.

Despite the Pistons' ongoing struggles, Weaver, 54, has built a promising young core that has the NBA on notice. That includes six first-round picks in the last three drafts, headlined by Cade Cunningham first overall last year and Jaden Ivey fifth overall this year.

Once they mature, the Pistons should be set up for long-term success.

"This team has the makings of something special, there's no doubt about it," owner Tom Gores said this season on opening night. "Their basketball talent and everything else, they have the makings of something very special. ... We got great people, great players, great leadership in Dwane and Troy, so I have tremendous confidence."

After losing 50-plus games in each of his first two years on the job, Weaver hoped the Pistons would be more competitive this season. His trade for veteran wing Bojan Bogdanovic signaled the team was ready to make a push. Bogdanovic has been great, but the Pistons lost Cunningham last month to season-ending shin surgery and look destined for another high lottery pick. Their .242 winning percentage is the worst in the NBA.

Still, there's a lot to like about the team's future, with Weaver leading the way.

"He's been aggressive but he's also very thorough," said Gores. "Troy knows what he's doing."
