The Red Wings will bring their rich Swedish history -- and a Swedish-heavy roster -- home to Stockholm next season.
The NHL announced Wednesday that the Red Wings will play two games in Sweden's capital city in November as part of the 2023 NHL Global Series. The Wings will be joined in Stockholm by the Maple Leafs, Senators and Wild.
Detroit will play Ottawa on Thursday, Nov. 16 and Toronto on Friday, Nov. 17 in a pair of Atlantic Division showdowns, before the Senators and Maple Leafs play the Wild to close out the weekend. Tickets will go on-sale to the public on May 2.
The Red Wings feature several Swedish players, including recent first-round picks Lucas Raymond and Simon Edvinsson. Recent second-round picks Jonatan Berggren and William Wallinder could be on the roster next season as well. And their past is littered with some of the greatest Swedish players ever, like Niklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg.
Captain Dylan Larkin said "it’s going to be great for our fans in Sweden with all the history the Red Wings have with players, past and present, that were born there." Asked what he's looking forward to in Stockholm, Larkin said, "Lucas Raymond setting up a team dinner because he doesn’t do it over here."
It will mark the second time the Wings have played regular season games in Stockholm, where they also opened the 2009-10 season with a pair of losses to the Blues.
Fans can inquire here about travel packages that include airfare, lodging and tickets to both Red Wings games.
