Red Wings draft MSU goalie, two defensemen with second-round picks

The Red Wings were on the clock three times in a span of seven picks in the second round of the NHL Draft Thursday and came out with a goaltender and two defensemen.

The trio is headlined by future Michigan State netminder Trey Augustine, No. 41 overall. The South Lyon native spent last season with the U-18 United States National Development Team, going 29-1-2 with a .926 save percentage and 2.13 goals against average. He also led the U.S. to the gold medal at the U-18 World Championships this spring.

One pick later, the Red Wings selected 6'3 right-shot defenseman Andrew Gibson. He spent last season with Soo Greyhounds of the OHL, totaling 21 points in 45 games.

Detroit took an even bigger left-shot defenseman five picks after that, Brady Cleveland. The 6'5 bruiser, who was teammates last season with Augustine, racked up 106 penalty minutes in 55 games last season.
