The Red Wings will be without forward Jakub Vrana indefinitely after he was placed in the NHL's player assistance program Wednesday as he seeks help for an off-ice issue.
Vrana, 26, missed Monday's loss to the Kings on Monday due to what the club called "personal reasons" and is no longer listed on the active roster.
The announcement of his placement in the player assistance program, which supports players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters, came Wednesday night.
Vrana, who's in the second season of a three-year, $15.75 million contract, will continue to be paid while receiving treatment, per the terms of the joint program between the NHL and the NHL Players Association.
He will return to the Wings when he's cleared for on-ice competition by the program administrators.
Vrana was expected to play a prominent role in Detroit's top six this season. He spent the first two games on the second line with Andrew Copp and David Perron and had a goal and an assist in the Wings' 5-2 win over the Devils last Saturday.
Acquired by the Red Wings from the Capitals in the Anthony Mantha deal at the 2021 trade deadline, Vrana has 22 goals in 39 career games with Detroit.
