Red Wings sign Thomas Greiss to complete tandem in net

The Red Wings have decided on their goalie tandem for next season.

Detroit signed Thomas Greiss to a two-year, $7.2 million deal Saturday, according to TSN. The former Islanders netminder will team up with Jonathan Bernier between the pipes.

Greiss, 34, posted a .913 save percentage in 31 games for the Islanders last season, while backing up Semyon Varlamov. He figures to play a similar role in Detroit behind Bernier, who found his game in the second half of 2019-20 after taking over full-time for Jimmy Howard.

The Wings opted not to re-sign Howard after he posted a career-worst .882 save percentage in 27 games last season. Detroit allowed the most goals in the league, part of a negative-122 goal differential that was 70 goals worse than the next-closest team.

Greiss broke into the NHL with the Sharks in 2007-08. He spent the last five seasons with the Islanders, where he teamed up with Robin Lehner to win the Jennings Award in 2018-19 as the tandem that allowed the fewest goals in the league.

With Bernier's contract set to expire next summer, Greiss also gives the Red Wings insurance in goal for the 2021-22 season.

Steve Yzerman has been active since free agency opened on Friday, also signing veteran forward Bobby Ryan and defenseman Jon Merrill.
