Slowly but surely, Steve Yzerman continues to turn over the Red Wings' roster.

In another bold move Monday, Yzerman placed 2015 first-round pick Evgeny Svechnikov on waivers. Svechnikov, 24, was one of 10 players waived by Detroit.

If he clears waivers by Tuesday at noon, Svechnikov can be assigned to either the Red Wings' taxi squad this season or the Grand Rapids Griffins. If not, his time in the organization has come to an end.

It just hasn't clicked in Detroit for the former 19th overall pick. He saw glimpses of the NHL over the last several seasons, including a career-high 14 games in 2017-18, but failed to claim a consistent spot in the lineup. He also missed the entirety of 2018-19 season due to a torn ACL.

In 51 games last season for the Griffins, Svechnikov scored 11 goals and 25 points. He scored zero points in four games with the Wings.

After suffering an apparent arm injury in training camp, Svechnikov was unlikely to start this season in Detroit. He returned to the ice on Monday, only to be waived a couple hours later.

He's not the first big name to be waived by Yzerman. The second-year GM dealt the same fate to longtime defenseman Jonathan Ericsson last season and to former alternate captain Justin Abdelkader this offseason.
