For Lucas Raymond, the stats don't jump off the page. Nor does the size. That will happen when your first professional season comes at age 16.
But the skill is clear.
"He will not be anything but a real top offensive player once he gets to the NHL," former GM of the Flames and current scouting director for TSN Craig Button said on NBC Sports after the Red Wings selected the Swedish winger fourth overall.
Asked if Raymond will remind the fans in Detroit of any players currently in the NHL, Button pointed to the fourth overall pick in 2015 and an All-Star in 2020: Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner.
"Like Mitch Marner, Lucas has the ability to be elusive and be comfortable at the same time in tight spaces, and yet he's always able to make plays in tight quarters. And that's what you have to be able to do at the NHL level," Button said. "And the other thing about his playmaking, don't underestimate his shooting. He's got a sneaky good shot."
A smaller player like the 5'10 Raymond, Marner debuted for the Maple Leafs at age 19 a year after they drafted him and put up 61 points in 77 games. His breakout season came two years later when he led the Leafs in scoring with 94 points.
If Raymond follows a similar arch in Detroit, the Red Wings' rebuild will get a serious boost.
