The Tigers have added another arm to the back of their bullpen. And perhaps another to the back of their rotation.
The club has agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal with lefty reliever Andrew Chafin, according to the Free Press. Chafin, 31, is coming off the best season of his career in which he logged a 1.83 ERA in 71 games for the Cubs and the A's. That ranked sixth in the majors among qualified relievers.
He has a career 3.30 ERA and about a strikeout per inning over eight big-league seasons.
Chafin will give manager A.J. Hinch another weapon in a bullpen that found some strong arms last season in All-Star Gregory Soto and converted starter Michael Fulmer, along with Jose Cisnero and Kyle Funkhouser. Lefties hit just .170 off Chafin last season. Righties didn't fare much better.
The Tigers also may have rounded out their rotation Wednesday with a minor-league deal for Wily Peralta, who posted a career low 3.07 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for Detroit last season. Peralta will earn $2.5 million if he makes the big-league roster, per the Free Press.
The 32-year-old right-hander could be the fifth arm in a rotation that features righties Casey Mize and Matt Manning and lefties Eduardo Rodriguez and Tarik Skubal.
Peralta's breakout last season was fueled by a newfound splitter. He finished fourth in ERA among AL pitchers who made at least 15 starts, trailing only Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and All-Stars Carlos Rodon and Lance Lynn.
