The left side of the Tigers' infield is about to be brand new.
The Tigers are calling up 23-year-old third baseman Jace Jung to join 24-year-old shortstop Trey Sweeney in Detroit, per reports. They will likely make their big-league debuts Friday night against the Yankees.
Both Jung and Sweeney are expected to see significant playing time down the stretch. It's a chance for the Tigers to take a look at two players who could factor heavily into their plans next season.
Jung is the Tigers' fifth-ranked prospect and the No. 64-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Drafted 12th overall two years ago, he's hitting .257 with 14 homers and an .831 OPS this season in Triple-A Toledo.
Jung can also play second base (his natural position), which might prompt the Tigers to give Colt Keith a look at first. Detroit has yet to announce the call-ups, but two players will have to be sent out to clear room on the roster.
After the Tigers swept the Mariners with their second straight comeback win on Thursday, A.J. Hinch said, "We've got a lot to do to get better. We've got a lot of room to grow. We're going to get younger -- we're also going to get better."
Right on cue, Jung and Sweeney are on their way.
