DETROIT (WWJ/AP) -- Keith Appling has been arrested by Michigan State Police.
Appling was apprehended without incident at 10:30 a.m. at the 1500 block of Commerce Park Drive in Chelsea, Michigan. A firearm was also recovered.
The former Michigan State University basketball star is a suspect in a deadly shooting that happened on Detroit’s westside over the weekend.
Police say Appling, 29, and the victim, 66, got into an argument and then a fight around 7 p.m. Saturday at a home on Whitcomb, in the area of Greenfield Road and Schoolcraft.
Police say Appling fired several shots and drove away in a newer model tan-colored Buick Regal.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified. No further information has been released about Appling’s relationship to the victim.
The Detroit Pershing graduate played for four years at MSU from 2010 to 2014, the team’s leading scorer heading into his junior season. After graduation, he signed two short-lived contracts with the Orlando Magic.
He spent 18 months on probation for drug charges in 2020, and about two years earlier, was sentenced to a year in jail for carrying concealed weapons and resisting arrest.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
