Patrick Mahomes didn't realize what exactly happened to his helmet until it was pointed out to him.
During the third quarter of the Chiefs' wild card round win over the Dolphins, Mahomes collided with Miami safety DeShon Elliott with such force that a piece of his helmet came flying off.
The cold weather undoubtedly played a role, and Mahomes somehow didn't end up missing a snap. VICIS, the company that makes the helmet, said that the helmet did ultimately protect Mahomes.
The quarterback reacted to the whole situation Wednesday in his weekly interview on The Drive.
"Yeah, I got to see it after the game," Mahomes said. "Obviously, it was bigger than I thought it was when I was on the field, but it's definitely a cool picture. You definitely don't want your helmet breaking, but at the same time I'll be able to hopefully keep that helmet for a long time and it'll be part of my trophy room.
If the Hall of Fame is interested in the helmet, Mahomes hasn't heard about it yet.
"The Hall of Fame has not called yet, but I know they're doing a lot of testing on it just to see what happened for the helmet to break," Mahomes said. "Obviously, it did its job and helped me where I wasn't hurt or anything like that. But they want to continue to test that stuff and try to get us the best products possible to protect ourselves when we're out there on the field."
