SAN DIEGO---- The San Diego Padres (50-57)  fail to secure the sweep over the visiting Baltimore Orioles (36-71). The last time both of these teams met, the Padres won both of the 2-game series in Baltimore. In the second half of the two 2-game series, the wins were split between both teams. Last night, the Padres lit up Petco Park with a roaring win over the Orioles 8-1, but today they struggled to hold off the persistent black and orange offense.

The Padres 16 home runs versus the Orioles this season set a MLB record in a season series of 4 or fewer games. The previous record holders were the Los Angeles Angels, who totaled 15 home runs in 3 games versus the Expos in 2003. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered in back-to-back games for the third time this season (last: June 28-29). Tatis Jr. has now improved to 5 lead off home runs this year. Last night it took him the first pitch, today it was four. He is the first Padre rookie and only the second Padre ever to hit lead off dingers in consecutive games. The last rookie to do this was Acuna Jr., but Tatis Jr. is the youngest to do it. Manny Machado followed suit and blasted a deep solo shot into the Estrella Jalisco Landing section right under the scoreboard to give the Padres an early 2-0 lead. Wil Myers extended his season-high hit streak to 4 games taxing on a deep double RBI to score Hosmer and add another tally. Later on improving to the final total of 5, with key RBIs from Francisco Mejia in the 3rd and 5th innings.

Dinelson Lamet started on the hill today for the Pads and finished with 5 punch outs and allowed 5 hits in 5 innings of play. Lamet has struck out 5 or more batters in each of his 5 career starts (30 total Ks). The Padres bullpen seems to be the reoccurring issue today as they gave up 5 runs late in the game. The loss was credited to LHP Matt Strahm (4-7) after he gave up 3 runs combined in the 7th and 8th innings. Pinch hitter, Hanser Alberto, Renato Nunez, Anthony Santander, and Chris Davis all had their way with the left hander. Davis’ solo home run in the 8th inning snapped his 0-for-18 streak in which 14-of-18 have been strike outs. Baltimore Orioles RHP Miguel Castro (1-1) was credited the win this afternoon.
