Charlie Blackmon's long fly ball made it over the wall. The ones hit by Tommy Pham and Trent Grisham didn't. And thus was the difference in Colorado's 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Padres on opening day at Petco Park.

Blackmon hit a two-out homer off reliever Drew Pomeranz to snap a 1-1 tie. Pham had missed a walk off shot moments carlier in the bottom of the ninth when his deep fly ball to left died on the warning track. Grisham could have tied it for San Diego, but his two-out fly ball in the bottom of the 10th snagged by Blackmon on the warning track.

Jairo Diaz, in relief, picked up the win, and Scott Oberg nailed down his first save. Starters German Marquez of Colorado and the Padres' Garrett Richards were both outstanding, however neither was around for the decision. Marquez allowed an RBI single to Manny Machado in the bottom of the first, but nothing else and struck out eight without a walk in eight innings.

Richards, allowed only two hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking three. The only run he allowed was uneamed, following an Austin Hedges error in the sixth, which set the stage for a Nolan Arenado RBI ground out.
