Eric Hosmer and Austin Hedges came through with RBI singles in the ninth inning to key a three-run uprising that carried the San Diego Padres past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-2, for their third straight victory Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
Chris Paddack (3-3) was the beneficiary of the rally, picking up the victory with eight strong innings of work, striking out six, walking none, and allowing just five hits. Emilio Pagan struck out the side in the ninth to record his first save.
Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the ninth with a walk against loser Blake Treinen and then stole second. Hosmer singled him in for a 3-2 San Diego lead. Wil Myers and Brian Dozier both singled as well to load the bases for Hedges, whose infield hit scored Hosmer to make it 4-2. A walk to Tommy Pham with one out forced in another run.
Both teams scored in the first inning. Josh Naylor doubled and eventually scored an unearned run when catcher Will Smith committed a passed ball. Joc Pederson tied it for Los Angeles with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning. Smith’s RBI double gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead in the second.
The Padres (18-20) tied the game in the seventh off Walker Buehler when Hosmer doubled and came on a single by Myers, who had three hits on the night.
