With Paddack's season coming to an end, we asked ourselves, 'what letter grade would we give him for his rookie year?'
While some on The Fan team thought he surpassed expectations, living up to the wave of hype he rode in on, others were a little more critical.
Here are the grades Paddack got from Coach Kentera, Gwynn & Chris, and Ben & Woods.
Coach Kentera:
Chris Paddack Grade is an A. He came in with tremendous hype after having a super 2018 in Double-A and I think surpassed all expectations and very excited to watch him going foreword.
Chris Ello:
I'd give him a B. The beginning and end we're good. The middle not so much. I need to see how he does with less restrictions and pitching much deeper into games. Though deGrom won a Cy Young with 10 wins last year, I still need to see double-digit wins before I get into A territory.
Steve Woods:
Chris Paddack gets an obvious A from me. Not only does he have the stuff to be a big leaguer, but he's got the work ethic and mental makeup to be an ace for the Padres for a long time to come.
Tony Gwynn Jr.:
Chris Paddack gets a B+ for 2019 season! I thought this was as good as you could ask for in rookie season. I also thought Chris did a tremendous job battling through the peaks and valleys of a big-league season. The only reason why he doesn't receive an A is because I still want to see what he looks like on 4 days rest as opposed to the 5 days he got all year.
Ben Higgins:
Let's not overthink this. Sure, Chris Paddack endured a couple of rough stretches, but even at his worst, the at-bats were never fun for opposing hitters. At his best, he was a dominating force. Overall, Chris Paddack was the best starting pitcher on the Padres, one of the best rookies in all of baseball, and showed a great deal of maturity in dealing with the inning restrictions imposed on him by the Padres. If you give him less then an A, then I hope I'm never in your class. I'll save the A+ for his future Cy Young season.
