Nobody needs a vacation more than Kings coach Alvin Gentry, who was in no mood after losing to the Mavericks in humiliating fashion Friday night.
Those are the words of a man on his last nerve, driven to drink by a team that, for all its talent, can’t seem to get its act together. The Kings got off to a hot start with a 39-point first quarter but the wheels fell off quickly with Sacramento managing just 57 points the rest of the way.
“Do I think we have a championship team? No, let’s be realistic,” said Gentry, who was promoted to interim head coach after Luke Walton was fired last month. “I think we have enough here that if everybody is engaged and locked in and doing what they’re supposed to do, then we can accomplish what we want to accomplish.”
Despite losing eight of their last 12, the Kings (15-22) are still just a half-game behind San Antonio for 10th in the Western Conference, which would qualify them for a “play-in” game. Defense has been their Achilles’ heel with only the Hornets (116.1 points per game) and Rockets (114.9) allowing more points than Sacramento (113.7) this season. Sacramento owns the league’s longest active playoff drought, last reaching the postseason in 2006.
